Hate to bring up Barb's old board again but I can't help but wonder what effect the closing down of the 'PRODUCER'S SECTION' has had on many of the producers ?
With it available top producers - the top of the line pros and the newbies just trying to break into the business, there were posts of the newest releases everyday. Now we have to hunt down the various sites and see if there's anything new or not ... almost as bad as the old days of hunting through thee TV Guide for that 20 second roll around.
If it sucks for the fans it must be terrible for those producers who relied heavily on that section in the most popular site to -almost without effort - grab the attention and get an order from a fan in need of FF wrestling fix.
I'm curious if anyone knows first hand how bad the closing of the Producers Section affected some of the producers ; less sales, wasn't affected much, etc. It seemed to me this could have sunk alot of them, no ?
I realize Dio provides the same service for producers but seems only one or two are using it consistantly.
That's an excellent question. I've got some opinions but not enough time to type them right now. I'll try to get a post up here soon with my contribution.
I just didn't want your post to go unacknowledged. This board could turn into a good exchange of ideas and info if we keep it going.
Glad to see someone thought my question was worth a reply. Though the closing down of Barb's place was a huge disappointment to most of us fans, the first thing I thought about was the producers losing probably the best advertising for their material that they'd ever have - reaching damn near every available fan ; whodidn't know of Barb's site and at least tune-in to the Producer's Section ?
Without that section to look at a few times a weeks - sometimes daily - I have no idea what is new even from the Big Guys like DWW and CW .... and I've since forgotten most of the smaller ones. Maybe there's another site that I don't know of where they are all posting their ads ?
But the way I see it, it had to be the end of the line for many without that free advertising. I'd also bet that many of the bigger names, even established and having a solid following, felt this in a BIG way too.
Looking forward to your thoughts on this when you get time .....
Dionysus operates a really nice message board, but for whatever reason there is not as much traffic here as on other boards such as http://www.freecatfights.com which attracts a variety of producers. I post for Robin and Sybil Starr, but I too, would like to see other producers post here as well.
I do not think you could get a definitive answer to your inquiry about a drop in sales due to the cessation of Barb's board. For example, since her board closed there has been a dramatic shift in sales away from tapes and dvds to downloads. Thus, I suspect many producers are doing better now as compared to before in terms of number of sales, but perhaps they would do even better if Barb's board was still around.
I can speak only for my tiny web business, but my decline has been due primarily to problems securing reliable credit card processing.
But as I track referrals to my site, I can say that very few other resources sent as many visitors my way as Barb's producer's board. It is amazing how difficult it is to find a universally known place for this type of messaging. The ASFW newsgroup used to be nice, but it has been totally hijacked by the Globalfight guys.
I think freecatfights.com has a good chance to substitute the defunct Producer's Section and invite anybody to post/look for advertisements on this site thought. To avoid further dispersion we just need to "elect"(I use quotation marks as I do not imagine quite clearly the mechanism)one site as the successor and try to use it first. Just my 0.02
Isn't the Freecatfights message board somehow affiliated with a producer?
In any case, last time I browsed it, there were some pretty strange things going on in the fiction sections, and there were a couple of very vocal posters who just wouldn't shut up about the glory of "contrast catfights" (apparently fights where you can tell the two women apart from each other).
Also, the moderator doesn't seem to be very active.
Basically, I feel that we need some very dedicated and organized person to invest in a good, memorable domain name, set up a spam-free posting system, invite every active producer to post news and to exchange links, and finally spread the word on every existing message board. Once the site is highly ranked on Google, he can make a small profit from ads.
Our fetish is certainly rare enough to need such a gathering point, and probably big enough to sustain one.
